Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and the Minister of Education. As a representative of one of the most populous constituency and a stronghold of his party as well as the minister in charge of the department with the largest budget in the government, he occupies a sensitive and influential position in his party and in government.
A medical doctor by profession, he was educated at Prempeh College and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Biology and Medicine. He also studied at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences from where he obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology.
In 2008, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia, counting among his constituents the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, whose iconic palace gave the constituency its name. “Napo” as he is commonly referred to quickly became one of the most outspoken members of his party and it was no surprise that on the party’s return to power, he was handed one of the great offices of the state. He is spoken of as one of the next generation of leaders in his party, the New Patriotic Party.
